Basic knowledge of recording studio! What is Mick Down and Mastering?

Even if you are recording for the first time, if you have professional audio equipment and experienced engineers, you can produce high quality music in the best recording studio environment.
Then, the sound source recorded in the recording studio can be made into a finished product by adjusting the volume and sound quality after recording according to the request of the performer.
Therefore, this time, I will introduce "mixdown" and "mastering" that you should remember as basic knowledge of recording studios.

What is mixdown?

Mixdown is the work of adjusting the volume and sound quality of a sound source recorded by band recording. By adjusting the volume and sound quality by mixing down, you can enhance the goodness of each instrument.

What is mastering?

Mastering is the process of creating a CD-like final sound source that has been mixed down. Adjust so that there is no difference in volume between songs, and adjust the overall impression so that there is no discomfort when listening to all songs.

How long does mixdown and mastering work take?

It takes about 2 to 3 days to mix down or master the recorded sound source.
For example, if you want to make a CD with 6 songs, you record at a pace of 2 songs a day, and then it takes 2-3 days for mix town and mastering, so it takes at least 6 days to complete the CD. It's a good idea to think that it will take.
In the case of band recording, the number of days required for work varies depending on the type of instrument and the number of parts, so it is recommended that you use the recording studio with plenty of schedule so that you can work slowly without rushing.

What are the benefits of using a recording studio for band recording?

You can record a good sound source in the best indoor acoustic space!
The advantage of using a recording studio when doing band recording is that you can "record a good sound source" in the best indoor acoustic space. It has the sound system needed for recording used by professional musicians, so you can record much better sound than when recording at home.

You can concentrate on playing with the support of engineers!
Professional engineers with excellent skills and knowledge to record good sound sources are stationed in the recording studio. Therefore, there is an advantage that the performer himself can "concentrate on the performance" by leaving all the operations and recording of the equipment to the engineer.
With a recording studio, you can not only smoothly proceed with the recording work with the support of engineers, but also handle mixing, mastering, pitch correction, etc.
Not only is the band recording studio equipped with a high-performance sound system, but engineers who are sound professionals are stationed there. Therefore, if you want to record the best sound quality without compromise and create a good work, we recommend you to use the recording studio.

Basic etiquette to keep in mind before using a recording studio

As soon as you step into a recording studio equipped with full-fledged equipment, many people may suddenly become nervous and stiff. Especially for first-time users, because they don't know how to use recording, only time has passed and it may not be possible to use the time in the recording studio meaningfully.

Here are some basic etiquette that beginners should keep in mind before using a recording studio.

 Arrived one hour before recording!
If you arrive at the recording studio and start preparing in a hurry, you may not be ready to start recording and you may not be able to concentrate on your performance. Since the usage time of the recording studio is decided at the time of making a reservation, it is a violation of etiquette to use it beyond the scheduled time considering the next user.
Therefore, it is important to "arrive one hour before recording" so that you can concentrate on recording within the set time.

Eating and drinking is basically outside the studio!
Some recordings take only a few hours, while others are overnight training camps, so you'll have more opportunities to eat and drink at the recording studio.
The important etiquette is that "eating and drinking is basically outside the studio." In some cases, drinks with PET bottles or lids can be brought into the studio, but the possibility of spilling drinks and food on expensive audio equipment is not zero, so check in advance where you can eat and drink. Then, let's eat and drink at the designated place. Also, smokers should follow the rules and smoke in the designated areas.

Take good care of your permanent instruments and equipment!
One of the merits of using a recording studio is that you have all the audio equipment that you cannot prepare yourself, but if you do not handle it properly, you may damage your instrument or equipment. Therefore, keep in mind that "use instruments and equipment carefully" that is permanently installed in the recording studio.
Even if you don't know how to use the audio equipment used for recording, if you are in a recording studio where professional engineers are stationed, you can handle complicated equipment operations, so you can concentrate on your performance. I can do it.
In order to record comfortably, let's remember the three introduced this time as the minimum etiquette.

 Basic flow of band recording
I think there are many people who have done self-recording but haven't done recording in a full-scale recording studio yet.
Here, we will introduce the "basic flow of band recording" for those who are recording sound using a recording studio for the first time. When recording, make a reservation with the recording studio in advance, and arrive at the studio one hour before the day to calm your mind.

① Set the instrument
Before you start band recording, first "set up your instrument".
Set up the instruments you need for band recording in the studio, just as you would when practicing. After completing the settings, check the position and distance of the amplifier and microphone while tuning.

② Start recording
Once you've set up and tuned your instrument, start recording. In the case of separate recording instead of one-shot recording, the drum or bass sound source is recorded first, then the guitar, and finally the vocal.

③ Mix work
Once the band recording is complete, the recording studio engineer will then start mixing to adjust the volume, sound quality, and more. You can choose to leave it to us or witness the work of mixdown and mastering. In the case of witnessing, it is common to record, mix down, listen to the sound source on another day, and then readjust if necessary.
The time required to complete the sound source data varies depending on what kind of adjustment is required after recording. Normally, when producing sound source data containing 6 songs, it takes at least 6 days to complete the work from recording to adjustment.
This is the basic flow of band recording.
